The University of Petra (UOP) has taken a number of measures to reduce fossil energy consumption. UoP invested in over USD 2.2 million in a rooftop photovoltaic (PV) solar system that has been installed on top of all campus building and parking lots. The total production capacity of the PV system is 3 MW DC capacity. Since 2019, upon the completion of the PV system installation, the PV system produces about 5 GW-h of electricity annually. The electricity produced by the system covered over 193% (almost the double) of the university needs for the years 2020 and 2021, and reduced the Green House Gases (GHGs) emissions by about 1500 tonnes of CO2,eq annually.

The university replaced security cars with electric cars to reduce carbon dioxide emission. It has a plan to procure an electric train to move students on the ring- road between buildings, as friendly use of the campus.

The university provides free parking for students and employees of 1,000 cars in five-story building where many free charging ports dedicated for electrical cars are available.

The below table summarizes the University of Petra (UOP) CO2,eq Emissions in kg CO2eq/year for the period (2017- 2023).  The table and following figures show the progress of University of Petra toward its targets originally has set 2060 as a target year to become carbon neutral which was modified later to 2045.
