The Department of Educational Sciences at University of Petra (UOP) organized a specialized training workshop titled “The Importance of Early Childhood and Parenting Challenges," presented by Dr. Aseel Al-Shawareb. The session targeted mothers of children enrolled at the university's nursery as part of the department's efforts to support early childhood development and strengthen the role of families in education.
Al-Shawareb stressed that the first five years of a child's life represent the most critical stage in shaping personality and cognitive, social and emotional growth, noting that nearly 90 per cent of brain development occurs during this “golden period," requiring attentive care from both families and society.
The workshop addressed three main themes: the importance of love and security in building a child's character, the role of positive family interaction in developing language and social skills, and daily parenting challenges such as tantrums, stubbornness, sleep difficulties, picky eating and excessive attachment. Participants were also guided on how to distinguish between normal developmental behaviors and those that require professional advice, while being introduced to practical strategies such as effective communication, daily playtime, encouragement instead of punishment, and balancing discipline with affection.
Interactive activities, including worksheets and real-life role-play, allowed mothers to apply what they learned, exchange experiences and raise questions in an open dialogue.
Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, saying it provided valuable knowledge and practical skills, while highlighting the need for more workshops and training programmes that support their parenting roles.
The event reflects the mission of UOP's Department of Educational Sciences to serve the local community and promote family awareness of early childhood as the foundation for building individuals and shaping the future.
